Cato the Elder By: Plutarch The Plutarch basically avers that Catos family background was wide. That he came from a beneficial stock of custody. His third cognomen was not Cato at scratch, but Priscus. later he got the nick rear of Cato for his great abilities. The Romans call a man who is wise and prudent, catus. He means that Cato thought he was raw in the slipway of the office and of being distinct, but in that knowing the importance of his ancestors he was very wise.

The Plutarch tells us that Catos first name was in reality Priscus, but was changed by the Romans to Cato. His name was changed because catus was known to mean impudent and wise. For Catos outward appearance, he had rosy hair and grey eyes. He had a healthy embody and was in shape with a little muscle on his bones. It was said that Cato had a great char acter.
